Born in Newmarket in Q3-1897, [Newmarket 3b:501] to Charles and Sarah BRIDGE (née ELEY).
1901 census...James [3] was at Warren Hill Cottages, Bury Road, Newmarket at his grand parents house (James & Caroline ELY) with his father Charles [30] a carter born Bottisham, and his mother Sarah [24] born Newmarket. 1911 census...By 1911 it appears that there are major changes to the family. At Church End, Stebbing, James is now James Charles Bridge ELEY[13] a farmers lad, living with William Charles BRIDGE [39] a horsekeeper on farm and born Six Mile Bottom, married for 4 years to Annie BRIDGE [27] born Halesworth. James is entered as 'son'. There is another child, George BRIDGE [6] born Newmarket. His mother appears to have died in Newmarket in 1905 and his father married Annie SAGO in Newmarket in 1907. James married Lilian May WHIBLEY at Strood in Kent in Q3-1917, who later re married as KITTLE and lived in Barkingside, Essex. 'Soldiers Died' gives his residence as Flamstead End, Hertfordshire. He enlisted in Colchester. |

From www.bedfordregiment.org.uk : Battalion war diary: 5 Dec 1917 - Ridge Trench and Ridge Support Trench 1AM Bn. started to withdraw under cover of the outposts this was carried out by companies from the left each company sending word when they had got clear of their position. 2AM Companies reported to be all clear Bn.H.Q. then moved back leaving R.E.s to destroy the dug-outs. The Battn. marched by companies to billets in RIBECOURT where a quiet spell was spent 3.15PM Orders were received that the battn. would move at dusk from RIBECOURT to RIDGE Trench and RIDGE Support Trench REF MAP 57 C N.E. 5.45 pm Battn moved off by companies at 100 yds interval & reached position without any casualties. 9PM Reports received that all companies were in position. James was the only death from the 8th Battalion that day. |
